Pit-stops and Pitfalls - February 9, 2007

Hello everybody!

Well, here is my first update from the Australian tour. Some of you will have already heard about my accident, so I won't go into too much detail. But, basically I fell off stage in Ballarat and bust my shoulder… now stop that, it’s not funny. No seriously, stop now. I think perhaps the most worrying thing about the whole incident was hearing how many other performers have done the same thing, although admittedly not all by accident (Dave Callan). The good news is the only break that showed up in the x-ray was the one the nurse had to take because she was laughing so much she couldn’t take the photo. So, it seems I have torn ligaments, which may take a few weeks to heal providing I stop having those dreams about winning gold on the monkey bars. Thank you for all your emails and messages on Myspace showing concern, certainly more concern than I got on the night when one guy shouted out “do it again!” Perhaps the theatre in Ballarat will now finally act, and level the notoriously sloped stage so you don’t need special hiking boots and a harness just to stay on it. Perhaps not. Apparently some children’s TV performer called Humphrey B Bear also took a tumble from the same stage. I’m told his big bear head came off, and the kids started to cry because Humphrey had seemingly been decapitated. Those kinds of images can scar a kid for life, so at least it was just me that was injured in my fall.

Other than that, the tour has gone pretty well so far. Myself and my two travelling companions have started an unofficial guide to finding the best cup of coffee in Australia. In every town we have been, we have hit the local cafes and bistros to sample the bean. Each cuppa is marked out of 10 according to taste and presentation. Thus far, we have found that many towns in country Australia seem to think that coffee is not servable unless it has reached a near volcanic temperature, and some places have been severely marked down due to causing actual bodily harm. I will publish the full results at the end of the tour, which I fully expect to be the subject of a parliamentary enquiry. But for now, it is my duty as a human being to implore you to NEVER EVER order a cup of coffee at the Wool Bales Café in Hamilton… Words cannot describe how bad the coffee was, which was just as well, because I wasn’t able to speak from severe lacerations to the roof of my mouth.

The other bit of news is that after much to-ing and fro-ing with the distribution company, I’m afraid to report my DVD which I filmed at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney in March last year will now not be released. Unfortunately, this decision was completely out of my hands. However, I will be recording another show at a secret, more, intimate location in Sydney hopefully in May for DVD release later this year, so if you want to know about tickets for that please sign up to the website. I have also designed a T-shirt for the tour which I got a sample of the other day and it’s really cool, a limited number will be available through the website shortly.

Anyway, I’ve just arrived in Kyneton for day 10 of the tour, so I’ve got to go and do a sound check, which since Ballarat now includes testing a sensor device that lets me know when I get too close to the front of the stage. Thank you to all the people who have made it along to a show on this tour so far. Hopefully, I will see many more of you along the way. If I’m coming to a town near you and you know where I can get a good cup of coffee, please drop me a line. Also, if your local theatre has any hidden surprises, advance warning would be much appreciated….

Best,

Danny
